The questions worth asking before you choose a canoe or kayak

Our canoe and kayak range is built around paddle sports rather than one narrow type of boat. That includes everything from recreational options for calmer water through to more specialised craft for river use, touring and whitewater. Our wider watersports range also sits around that core, including paddles, PFDs, helmets, dry bags, wetsuits and rescue gear, because the right boat is only one part of the setup.

We start with the scenario. The better choice depends on where you will paddle, how much gear you need to carry, who is coming with you, and how stable or manoeuvrable the craft needs to feel. For some customers, a canoe makes more sense because of capacity and group use. For others, a kayak is the better fit because it suits the water type, paddling style or intended distance. We do not try to force one answer across every trip. We match the craft to the job.

The main decision points are experience level, intended water type, transport and storage, and what the trip is asking the craft to do. Flatwater, estuaries, multi-day touring and whitewater all push the shortlist in different directions. A stable canoe for a school trip and a more technical kayak for rapids are solving very different problems, so they should not be judged by the same criteria.

No. Our watersports range covers beginners, families, outdoor programs and experienced paddlers. In practice, that means the right recommendation changes with skill level. A new paddler or family often needs a more forgiving setup. Someone heading into more technical water may need a craft and safety system with a very different emphasis. That is why our advice stays practical and experience-based rather than just spec-based.

Group buying usually needs more than a good boat. You need the right mix of capacity, stability, safety gear and suitability for novice users. We work with outdoor education and group programs, so we look at the full setup rather than treating the boat as a standalone purchase. If the paddling program includes students, beginners or mixed ability levels, that affects what is appropriate straight away. Our Gear List service can also help group leaders build a more suitable package around the trip and budget.

A lot. In paddle sports, the boat is only part of the safety equation. Properly fitted PFDs, helmets where appropriate, dry storage, rescue gear and the right accessories all matter. We place strong emphasis on safety gear because the needs change with the water environment. Calm flatwater and more demanding moving water are not the same conversation.
