About Wilderness Equipment

Wilderness Equipment is a Western Australian outdoor brand with a history stretching back to 1977.

The company began after its founder spent years making and testing equipment for bushwalking, paddling and extended backcountry travel. Early products included tents, daypacks, cycle panniers, sleeping bags and outdoor clothing produced from a family home in Western Australia.

Wilderness Equipment later developed expedition packs, tunnel tents and technical clothing, including specialised equipment for the Australian Antarctic Division and outdoor organisations.

Today, the range centres on hiking and expedition packs, tents and shelters, daypacks, rainwear, gaiters and outdoor clothing. Product development remains based in Western Australia, while manufacturing includes long-term specialist factory partners in Vietnam.

What matters to us is the continuity of the design approach: equipment developed around load carriage, weather protection, durability and the ability to remain useful over many years.

WHY CHOOSE WILDERNESS EQUIPMENT?

We think Wilderness Equipment deserves consideration when reliability and long-term use matter more than achieving the lowest possible packed weight.

That strength comes with trade-offs. A structured load-carrying pack will generally weigh more than a minimalist frameless design. A heavy-duty tent may provide greater durability or stability but take up more room in your pack. Robust rainwear can also be heavier than a lightweight emergency shell.

The right decision depends on what you are carrying, how far you are travelling and the conditions you need the equipment to withstand.

Why Offtrack Stocks Wilderness Equipment

A pack carrying food, shelter, water and group equipment needs to fit correctly and transfer the load effectively. A tent used through repeated school programs or exposed camps needs different priorities from a shelter carried for an occasional summer overnight. Rainwear used in scrub, sustained rain or fleet environments also needs to withstand more than a brief shower.

Wilderness Equipment gives us options for those customers. Its range includes structured hiking packs, expedition-capacity models, backpacking and winter tents, tarps, rainwear, gaiters and clothing intended for extended or repeated use.

We do not assume the heaviest-duty model is automatically the safest purchase. An 85-litre expedition pack is unnecessary for many recreational hikers. A winter tent can add weight and complexity that a sheltered three-season trip does not require. Durable fleet rainwear may also be more jacket than someone needs for occasional day walks.

Our role is to help you compare capacity, fit, materials, weather protection and packed weight before you commit. That is especially important with backpacks, where the correct harness and torso fit matter more than the number printed on the product name.

Questions Adventurers Ask About Wilderness Equipment

IS WILDERNESS EQUIPMENT GOOD FOR HIKING AND BACKPACKING?

Yes. Hiking packs, expedition packs and shelters are central parts of the Wilderness Equipment range.

The brand is particularly relevant when you need to carry moderate or heavy loads, expect demanding weather or want equipment designed for repeated use. However, some models prioritise durability and load control over minimum weight.

For lightweight overnight trips, a smaller and simpler option may be more appropriate than a full expedition setup.

HOW DO I CHOOSE A WILDERNESS EQUIPMENT BACKPACK?

Start with the equipment you genuinely need to carry, then choose the pack volume and harness size around that load.

Capacity matters, but fit matters more. Check torso length, hip-belt placement, shoulder-harness adjustment and the weight the pack is designed to manage. A correctly fitted smaller pack can be more comfortable than a larger model with the wrong harness.

Try the pack with realistic weight where possible. Clothing alone will not show how the harness behaves once food, water and shelter are added.

ARE WILDERNESS EQUIPMENT TENTS SUITABLE FOR AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS?

The range includes tents and shelters designed for conditions ranging from ordinary backpacking to exposed alpine and winter use.

That does not mean every model suits every Australian environment. Ventilation may be a greater priority in warm and humid areas, while strong pole architecture and secure pitching become more important in exposed or alpine terrain.

Compare the tent’s intended season, capacity, pole structure, ventilation, packed weight and included components. A tent designed for severe weather may be unnecessary for sheltered summer camping, while a lightweight model may require greater care and site selection.

WHAT WARRANTY DOES WILDERNESS EQUIPMENT PROVIDE?

Wilderness Equipment currently warrants its products against faulty materials and manufacture for the life of the product, subject to its published terms and exclusions.

The warranty does not cover normal wear, the natural deterioration of materials, improper use or inadequate care. Examples given by the manufacturer include damage from hauling an unprotected pack over rock, contact with thorny scrub and storing equipment while damp.

Clean, dry and store your equipment according to its care instructions. Keep your proof of purchase and contact Offtrack if you experience a possible manufacturing fault with a Wilderness Equipment product purchased from us.
