MSR has a long-standing reputation for engineering-focused tents, stoves, cookware and water equipment. Many products are designed around demanding backpacking and expedition use.

That does not mean every MSR product is automatically right for you. The best option still depends on your budget, conditions, group size and willingness to maintain the equipment.

As a general guide:

• FreeLite: prioritises lower pack weight for backpacking.
• Hubba Hubba: balances weight, space and broad hiking versatility.
• Elixir: offers straightforward liveability and value, with a higher packed weight.
• Front Range: provides group shelter rather than the same fully enclosed setup as a conventional inner-and-fly tent.

Check season rating, capacity, packed weight, floor dimensions and included components before deciding. Tent names and specifications may also change between model generations.

The PocketRocket 2 is the simpler and lighter design. It suits hikers who want a compact stove for boiling water and preparing basic meals.

The PocketRocket Deluxe adds features including pressure regulation and a built-in push-start igniter. Those conveniences add some weight and cost, but can improve usability in changing conditions.

We still recommend carrying a separate ignition source. Built-in igniters can become wet, damaged or unreliable.

Choose a canister stove when you want simple setup, low weight and quick control for typical hiking meals. Canister stoves are usually the easier choice for most recreational campers.

Consider a liquid-fuel stove for extended trips, colder conditions or destinations where compatible gas canisters may be difficult to obtain. Liquid-fuel models require priming, maintenance and more careful operation.

Fuel bottles or gas canisters are generally sold separately unless the individual product listing specifically says otherwise.

Confirm what is included before ordering and make sure compatible fuel is legally and practically available at your destination. Pressurised fuel canisters cannot normally be taken on passenger aircraft.

No. Never operate a camping stove inside a tent, enclosed shelter, vehicle or other poorly ventilated space.

Camping stoves produce carbon monoxide and present serious fire, burn and fuel hazards. Use them outdoors on a stable surface, away from tents, dry vegetation and combustible equipment. Follow the stove manual and allow it to cool before handling or disconnecting fuel.

Dromedary bags prioritise ruggedness and durability. They are generally better suited to demanding transport, group camps and situations where the bag may receive rougher treatment.

DromLite bags reduce weight and pack down smaller, making them more attractive for hiking. That lower weight comes with a less rugged construction, so they should be handled accordingly.

MSR currently publishes a three-year limited manufacturer’s warranty for the original purchaser. It covers defects in materials and workmanship when the product is used for its intended purpose, cared for and properly maintained.
