About XTM Performance

XTM Performance is an Australian-owned and designed snow and outdoor brand established in 1999.

The brand began with a focus on rugged ski gloves and developed into a broader range of snow outerwear, thermal base layers, Merino clothing, socks and cold-weather accessories. Its founder, former Winter Olympian Pete Forras, drew on experience gained skiing and competing in Australian alpine conditions.

We think XTM is particularly useful for customers who want functional winter gear at an accessible price. The range covers adults and children, occasional snow visitors, regular skiers and people simply looking for reliable warmth outdoors.

That does not mean every XTM product serves the same purpose. A heavily insulated snow jacket can be too warm for active hiking. A lightweight thermal may suit movement better than stationary use. Waterproofing, insulation, breathability and fit also vary between products.

We recommend choosing according to the activity and expected weather—not just the coldest temperature printed in a forecast.

At the same time, there is little value in buying highly technical gear for conditions you are unlikely to encounter.

There are trade-offs. Merino requires more careful washing and can cost more. Insulated snow clothing may feel bulky away from the slopes. Waterproof ratings differ between garments, and a water-resistant casual jacket should not be treated as a technical shell.

IS XTM PERFORMANCE GOOD FOR SNOW AND WINTER USE?

Yes—provided you choose the right product for the conditions.

XTM makes purpose-designed snow jackets, pants, gloves, thermals and accessories. However, warmth, waterproofing and breathability vary by model. A jacket suitable for resort skiing may not be the best choice for high-output hiking or more demanding backcountry travel.

Check the individual garment’s waterproof rating, seam construction, insulation, ventilation and fit before deciding.

WHAT IS XTM PERFORMANCE BEST KNOWN FOR?

XTM began with ski gloves and is now best known for accessible snow clothing, thermal base layers, Merino products and winter accessories.

Its broad range makes it particularly useful for families, occasional snow visitors and customers building a complete cold-weather setup rather than shopping for one highly specialised item.

HOW SHOULD I LAYER XTM CLOTHING?

A practical winter system normally includes:

  • A base layer to manage moisture and retain warmth
  • A midlayer or insulated layer when additional warmth is required
  • An outer layer to protect against wind, rain and snow

Avoid relying on one very heavy garment for every condition. Separate layers allow you to adjust as the weather and your activity level change.

Cotton is generally a poor base-layer choice in cold conditions because it retains moisture and can leave you colder when activity slows.

SHOULD I CHOOSE MERINO OR SYNTHETIC THERMALS?

Choose Merino when you value temperature regulation, softness and odour resistance over several days of wear. It works well for travel, skiing and lower-intensity outdoor use.

Choose synthetic thermals when fast drying, durability and a lower purchase price are priorities. They can suit active use, children and shorter trips.

Fabric weight also matters. A lighter thermal is often better during high-output activity, while a heavier layer provides more warmth when conditions are colder or movement is limited.
