Chameleon

Minimise your footprint and give outdoor gear a new life with Chameleon!

Chameleon is the natural evolution of our much-loved Second Life Project. Built on the same foundations of sustainability, community, and adventure, Chameleon takes things further—re-homing, recycling, and re-making outdoor gear so that nothing goes to waste, and more people get the chance to explore the outdoors.

What is Chameleon?

Formerly known as the Second Life Project, Chameleon is Offtrack’s initiative to reduce waste, reuse materials, and re-home outdoor equipment.

When gear is no longer needed by its current owner, Chameleon steps in to find it a new life. Whether that’s with individuals on NDIS programs, schools, scouts, or community groups with limited budgets, this gear makes outdoor experiences possible that might otherwise be out of reach.

How Chameleon Works

We operate through three pathways:

Re-Home

Good-quality gear is matched with new users who need it most. From backpacks to sleeping bags, these items find a second life with adventurers who wouldn’t otherwise have access to them.

Re-Cycle

If equipment can’t be re-homed, we do our best to recycle its materials in an environmentally sustainable way. Keeping outdoor gear out of landfill is at the heart of what we do.

Re-Make

Some donations arrive as samples, demos, or gear with a little wear and tear. We repair, rebrand, and restore these items, giving them the chance to be used again. Occasionally, some of these are sold at low cost to help fund Chameleon and support future donations.

Why It Matters

EVERYTHING EVENTUALLY COMES TO AN END BUT THIS WAY MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS CAN HAVE A 2ND LIFE

By supporting Chameleon, you’re not just reducing waste—you’re empowering people to get outdoors. Re-homed and re-made equipment helps individuals, schools, and community programs keep running, while giving more people the opportunity to experience the benefits of nature.

Still Deciding?

What’s the minimum spend?

All rentals require a minimum booking value of $1,000. This makes it ideal for school groups, outdoor educators, or multi-day trips where you’re hiring a full setup – such as tents, sleeping systems, packs, and safety gear. If you're a solo traveller or just after a few items, consider teaming up with friends or hiring everything you need in one go to get the most value from your booking.

How do I return gear?

Returning your gear is simple. Each rental comes with clear return instructions and any packaging needed for safe transit. Depending on your location, you can either drop the gear back to us or arrange a courier pickup. We’ll help you organise the return process so it’s as smooth and stress-free as your adventure should be.

What if something’s damaged?

We get it – outdoor gear is meant to be used. General wear and tear is expected and won’t be penalised. However, significant damage, misuse, or missing items may incur a repair or replacement fee. We encourage you to treat the gear as if it were your own, and if something goes wrong, just let us know – we’re here to help, not to catch you out.

Can I rent just one item?

Yes, you can, but the $1,000 minimum hire still applies. If you’re only after a single tent or sleeping bag, we recommend bundling it with other essentials or coordinating your hire with mates, school groups or travel partners. It’s a great way to maximise the value and access professional-grade equipment without the ownership costs.
