Why exposure to UV can compromise synthetic materials…

Synthetic fabrics used for tents and rucksacks are coated with a water repellent treatment. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light both destroys the water repellency and leads to a reduction in fabric tear strength, significantly shortening the lifespan of equipment.

The application of Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash® can double the effective life of equipment by cleaning and protecting against UV damage, while also revitalising Durable Water Repellency (DWR) to keep the rain out.

Tent and rucksack fabrics are light and strong, but vulnerable…

Tents and rucksacks use synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or polyester, with a thin watertight polyurethane (PU) or elastomeric coating on the inside and a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the outside. This combination gives great strength and water resistance, combined with light weight, ideal attributes for outdoor equipment.

Unfortunately these fabrics are vulnerable to sunlight and in two weeks of continuous exposure, can lose up to half of their strength. Additionally, the inner coating will degrade if it is left damp for long periods.

Nikwax takes great care to minimise the effect of Nikwax products on the environment and on you, the consumer. Nikwax waterproofing products are WaterBased, non-aerosol and non-flammable. They contain no harmful solvents and are completely free of fluorocarbons (which have been shown to be persistent in the environment and have been associated with serious health issues).

Apply Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash® by hand…

Erect tent OR protect working surface and lay item flat.
Spray evenly to outside of fabric. For large items apply in sections.
Rub in well with a damp cloth/sponge, paying attention to particularly dirty areas. Use a soft nylon brush if necessary to remove stubborn stains.
Rinse with clean water using a cloth or sponge.

Drying:
Item(s) should be air dried. Allow item(s) to fully dry before packing away

*Marks may appear on fabric if excess product is not wiped away. Test on a hidden area first.
Use approximately 50ml of product per 1m2 of fabric.

The coverage is approximate and depends on the condition of the fabric being treated.

Mitch and the crew at Off Track went above and beyond with their service and pricing as it is second to none . Have just lodged two orders for On Track Meals as their pricing is awesome and delivery is speedy. I would very strongly recommend Offtrack! I came last year for a rain jacket, Marcus was really helpful finding exactly what I was after and giving me all the info and options, super informative and patient. I came back recently to browse tent and pack options, again Marcus walked me through several options, answered all my questions, and when requested gave me recommendations based on what I was looking for. Offtrack will support you to buy the right gear for what you’re looking for, whether that’s recreational trips or guiding, and I felt they were super responsive to finding products in the budget I was looking for, and committed to finding options for me for a good price. Staff:
Extremely helpful and cater towards hiking/backpacking much better than other big brand stores.

Price:
Often find geat deals on discontinued products of high quality. They also have a better price to quality ratio opposed to other big brand stores. The best gear however still is and always will be expensive no matter what shop you go to, just decently better here.

Selection Range:
Mostly high end brands with some budget options. The overall selection isn’t huge but what more do you actually need.

Cons:
Can be a bit hard to find.
Lacking demonstration of tents so you’re not always sure what your looking at. But the shop is fairly small and the staff will help you find to what your looking for anyway.

By my personal experience, this is the best shop in North and East Melbourne coming from The Yarra Valley.

I made an order online (Wilderness Equipment Second Arrow UL tent) hoping it may arrive on time for a quick trip to the Alpine region. It arrived within 48 hours! The online store had a fantastic selection of stock, delivery was super fast and the cost was lower than all other in stock stores I researched. I'm definitely going to be a returning customer.
